The "friend." Every red-blooded, healthy woman has one…THIS guy is always in the background, the fellow who either she has grown up with for an unspecified amount of time, works with and enjoys the platonic time with him or someone she has established a bond with at some point and feels compelled to keep talking to him for advice on the losers she keeps dating, including you, buddy ol' pal. Look across the room at her; at some point this week she has bitched about you to this "friend" and he has complacently told her to hang in there, to your favor, sure, but his benevolent advice to her counts for brownie points in the long run. She trusts him more than she trusts you, believe me.

So how does he fit in the big picture? Stay with me here, because in order to understand this guy, I'll need to get off the beaten path and refer to another point on a tangent. Women and men can never be "just friends." A guy will stay friends with a woman out of two reasons: One, he wouldn't mind hitting it. There, I've just said what millions of men won't admit, or even better, what millions of women don't want to hear. Their platonic friend, their confidante, their trusted buddy outside of their primary (and yes, I chose that word carefully) relationship wouldn't mind eventually tagging that ass.

Two: Men NEED women friends. Not only are they the ultimate ego uplifter and a potential booty-buddy, but they help a man feel like he isn't tied down. Men, by nature, aren't a monogamous animal. Gene Simmons of KISS-fame makes the same point in his book, I'm simply agreeing here and reiterating. Men choose to be monogamous when a good 'un comes along, even if it's for a little while at worst. But really, how cool is it when your girlfriend says you are an asshole and you have your woman-friend say she understands your point of view?

Aahh, and before you feminists open your pie-hole and shout, "That's a man's 'friend,' that applies to men too!" let me say this: the difference herein between men having women friends and vice-versa, is that a guy's women friends eventually move on. They do. They eventually commit their investment time in another guy or simply give up on the relationship going to the next level, more so the first reason. Guys, on the other hand, are fine with letting the possibility of tagging that ass into the next day, the next week, next year, whatever. Why? Knowing it's there to eventually happen is almost as good as getting to tag it. Almost. But to a guy, that's OK.

So the "friend" in a woman's life, the one she won't necessarily give up on for you in front of you or behind your back, is hanging in there for the payoff.
